How to use this tile calculator
Measure the length and width of the floor or wall area, pick your tile size, and choose a waste percentage. The calculator converts the room area into square inches, divides by the tile area, and applies the waste allowance to give a total tile count.
Use 10% waste for simple rectangular rooms with a straight layout. Choose 15% if you are installing diagonally, have lots of cutouts, or are tiling a room with many corners - every cut edge needs a full tile of origin.

Should I add extra tile for waste?
Always. Plan on 10% for a simple layout and 15% for diagonal or irregular rooms. You will also want a few spare tiles years later for repairs - matching discontinued tile is nearly impossible.
What size grout line should I use?
1/16 to 1/8 inch for rectified (precision-cut) large format tiles, 1/4 to 1/2 inch for hand-made and stone tiles. Larger grout joints hide small variations in tile size.
Should I buy tile by the box or by the piece?
By the box - but always buy whole boxes to reach your count. Check the box coverage (usually 8-15 sq ft) and round up to the next whole box.
